Igniting a Career in Real Estate: Your First Client

As a new real estate agent, you’re eager to get started in the business and want to prove yourself as a knowledge resource to your clients. However, securing that first client can be easier said than done.

If you’ve been an agent for a few months and still haven’t gotten a client, don’t become discouraged. Typically, the first year as a real estate agent is the hardest, but I know that you can persevere! The good news is that you can apply some of the following methods to get your first client, and more to come.

Network

When you first enter your new real estate career, success is all in who you know, or your immediate network of people. Reach out to these people. They may consist of family members, friends, old co-workers or members of your congregation. Here, you already have an advantage to work with them when they need a real estate professional’s opinion or help.

Once you’ve done a good job for them, they’re likely to pass on your contact information to others. Now you have a real client base.

Digital Presence

You’ll be hard pressed to find potential clients without first creating a strong digital presence for yourself. I’m speaking about social channels such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram. These days, everyone starts their search for a person on one of these platforms, so it’s important to maintain a professional presence online. Furthermore, utilizing social media as a means of advertising is simply smart business. This is the digital equivalent of seeing an ad of a local real estate agent’s service in the newspaper. You can even target your audience by geographic location or by age.

Content

Not only should you be creating Facebook ads and maintaining your social media pages, you should also be posting informative content. This creates trust, especially when the content is crafted in high quality because people tend to share it. This is how your reach and influence grows.

Website and Online Directories

The power of the internet does not end with social media. In fact, real estate agents should be taking advantage of lead generating websites and online directories to find their first client.

By joining websites such as Trulia, Redfin, and BoldLeads, you can set up your online presence without much effort. Meanwhile, channels like Google My Business or Yelp serve as review aggregators. People can leave reviews here and the more high quality the review, the easier you are to find online.

As you can see, there is no reason to get discouraged if you haven’t landed your first client. It just takes a little bit of legwork and some perseverance and soon you will find yourself with plenty of leads!
